Implant treatment has emerged as a reliable solution for replacing missing teeth, offering functional and esthetic benefits. From a periodontal perspective, the success of implant therapy relies heavily on the health of the surrounding peri-implant tissues. This lecture will try to analyze the critical role of soft tissues in implant treatment, focusing on peri-implant phenotype: clinical and scientific evidence. Furthermore, the biological mechanisms underlying peri-implant health and disease, such as the interplay between biofilm and host response, will be elaborated. Strategies to prevent and treat peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, including nonsurgical and surgical interventions will be discussed as well. Emphasis is placed on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure optimal outcomes. This lecture highlights the need for a comprehensive periodontal approach to enhance the longevity and success of implant therapy.
Biography:
Iva Milinković is a periodontist and oral implantologist specialized in treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. She is the Associate Professor at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the School of Dental Medicine in Belgrade, Serbia. Dr. Milinkovic graduated in 2006 at the School of Dental Medicine in Belgrade and defended her doctoral dissertation in 2011 at the same institution. In 2014, she passed a specialist exam in Periodontics and Oral medicine. Awarded an ITI scholarship, she spent a year at the Eastman Dental Hospital in Rome, Italy. In the period 2014-2020, she has been a member of the Junior Committee of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO). She has been a member of the Scientific Committees for the annual EAO conferences of the EAO in 2020, 2021 and 2022. She served as a Congress Committee member of the EAO. In 2023. She became a member of the Board of directors of the EAO. She is an active member of the ITI and the EFP. Iva Milinkovic is Section Editor in International Journal of Prosthodontics. She has participated in various national and international scientific projects. She is the author of over 120publications in scientific and professional journals. She co-authored the Manual in Periodontology for the undergraduate students (in Serbian).
